Wolves take to the rout! |
EDIT: (ooops Killswitch is right, Runic weapons don't stack) Once I get my Rune Priests into position its death for almost any psychic power with 4+ rolls to negate. So what you get is a 24 inch bubble around the Rune Priest with a 50% chance of knocking down a power, you can always add a Wolf Tail Talisman to give you another shot at 5+ to knock it down.
The list I am running centers on the strength of the wolves which is their Grey Hunter packs, 6 of them to be exact. One squad is completely dismounted, their job is to seize an objective in my backfield and hold it, as such they aren't overarmed with a power fist, but their double power weapons will put the hurt on anything trying to take their objective. A second objective grabbing unit comes in the form of a small 6 man squad in a Razorback, their job is to hold onto an objective once taken by the primary hunter units. The primary hunter units are the two squads with Rune Priests and the two squads in Rhino's. This gives us four Grey Hunter squads that are each 10 man strong to take the midfield and hold it against the enemy. I can task organize them however I want and sometimes will push a Rune Priest with two squads forward while the second RUne Priest holds the center. In dawn of war I will typically deploy a Rune Priest squad forward, HQ and two troop choices, at the center of the table pushing back the enemy deployment and disrupting their plan with Tempests Wrath.
Rounding out the list is my Long Fangs, two packs of 6 with all missiles and one Razorback. Long Fangs are even more important with the emergence of scarab swarms. Vulnerable to blasts your frag missile shots are doubly powerful against them and in most games against Necrons I target them first...
Rune Priest, Melta Bombs and Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Combi melta with 8 Grey Hunters with Melta gun, Power Sword, Wolf Standard and Rhino
Rune Priest, Chooser of the Slain and Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Combi melta with 8 Grey Hunters with Melta gun, Power Sword, Wolf Standard, Rhino
Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Combi melta, 9 Grey Hunters with Melta gun, Power Sword, Wolf Standard and Rhino
Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Combi melta, 9 Grey Hunters with Melta gun, Power Sword, Wolf Standard and Rhino
Wolf Guard with Power Sword and Combi melta, 5 Grey Hunters with Melta gun, Power Sword and Razorback
Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Combi melta, 9 Grey Hunters with Melta gun, Power Sword, Wolf Standard
6 Long Fangs with 5 Missile Launchers in Razorback
6 Long Fangs with 5 Missile Launchers
for Psychic powers one Rune Priest gets JOTWW and Murderous Hurricane while the other gets Tempest's Wrath and Living Lightning. Each Priest is designed to fight a different army and their position on the battlefield changes depending on the opponent. Tyranids will get the JOTWW up close and personal while Eldar will see the Tempest's Wrath sooner.
What this list goes for is maximum flexibility and performs well at almost anything. I have seen too many times when a list gets a decisive blow landed upon it by mission and deployment before even a shot is fired. This list aims to mitigate those things as much as possible by doing what wolves to best, maneuvering to isolate your parts and devouring them one at a time.

:-) Fairly similar to my Wolves... One question, you note that the Scarabs are vulnerable to blasts, but are they immune to instant death? I seem to recall just shooting AT missiles ("krak") at them to remove one stand/shot... But I could be mistaken as I've only played one game against the new codex and he only brought a small squad that died horribly and quickly... I do tend to take a variety of weapons in my Fang squads, though they are still mostly ML's... Fun and games with Logan for the Relentless or Tank Hunter for "less serious" games...
ReplyDeleteInteresting on the Runic Weapons nullify, I assumed it was only one like the hoods, and I'd expect it FAQ'd... If GW were responsive like that of course... I do tend to layer the Psy defenses though with the Rune Priests and Wolf Tails for the additional 5+ to nullify "bad things happening" like lash, IG's morale killer, etc... This one they have FAQ'd and it does in fact stack (ref: Bjorn's layered defenses)
Its been FAQ'd for about a year now, check the GW FAQ!
ReplyDeleteCrap, I stand corrected good sir! Only one weapon may be used. I will have to add the tails to get the 5+ that stacks then.
ReplyDeleteAs for frag vs. Krak I used frag because of how tightly packed they were in the beginning and with the double hits I thought the math was better that way. Tho againts a long line of them the krak would probably be my choice. I guess it depends on how they ate laid out and what the terrain is forcing them to do.
Good catch on the tunic weapon, I thought I had read everything correctly, apparent not!
